Field Day 2006

On June 24th & 25th, Amateur Radio Operators (Hams) all over the World will participate in an annual exercise called FIELD DAY.

What is FIELD DAY?

According to the Amateur Radio Relay League, the object is, "To work as many stations as possible and in doing so, to learn to operate in abnormal situations in less than optimal conditions." That’s the official reason for having FIELD DAY, but another reason is for Amateur Radio Operators and their families to get together to have LOTS OF FUN and show Visitors many of the things that can be done with Amateur Radio – from the old Morse code to the new satellite communications and latest digital modes.

AARO (callsign AA5RO) holds their event at the pavilion along side the running track behind University Hospital, 4502 Medical Drive, near corner of Louis Pasteur.

While you can see the site from Babcock Road, you need to drive around behind the hospital and enter guard gate off Floyd Curl & Medical (same as used for their meetings). See map below.

Here are maps of AARO's FD location

SARC (Callsign W5SC) holds their event at the Shavano Park Police Department, near the corner of DeZavala and NW Military.

Here is a map showing location of the SARC FD Event held at the Shavano Park Police Department.

ROOST (Callsign W5ROS) will again operate from the Meyer Ranch in Hobson Texas. Those of you who plan to be a part of Field Day 2006 need to provide some amount of input for this operation to take place. Take Hwy 181 south to Hobson, Texas, just past Hwy 81 and turn right (south) on CR-219 (county road). Go past CR-218 and look for antennas on vehicles or in the air on your right. There should be some signage out on the road as well. If you miss CR-219, look for CR-218 and come back as shown on the map below.

Dieter, NS5A is the Chairman for Field Day 2006. Volunteer for time slots by contacting Dieter at dbelletz@satx.rr.com and Tom, K0ZGC, at k0zgc@stic.net and we'll take care of the paperwork. Logging will be done on laptop computers this year. The logging program we will be using is called LOGGER which is the same one we use at the radio club. It is user friendly.

Kendall County Amateur Radio (KARS) hold their event up in Boene at the Kendall County Fairgrounds. This site is on the edge of the East side of Boerne.

Just follow Hwy 46 east from Boerne until you see the signs for the Fairgrounds..

New Braunfels - Talk In repeater is 147.00- (103.5PL)

Steve - K5ZP, Chuck - N5VK, and the Guadalupe Valley Amateur Radio Club invite you to participate in Amateur Radio Field Day 2006 at the Comal County Fair Grounds. This is a free event, and is open to the public. We will use temporary stations & emergency power to attempt to contact as many other stations as possible. A variety of radios, antennas, & operating modes will be demonstrated. A hidden transmitter hunt (on the FM broadcast band) and a radio controlled demonstration are planned in the early evening on Saturday.

When Setup begins at 11am, Saturday June 24th. Operations will commence from approximately 1pm Saturday until 1pm Sunday. Yes, this is a 24-hour event. Feel free to take a turn on the microphone during the wee hours of the morning. :)

Where We will be operating from the Comal County Fair Grounds. The operating position is the near the livestock shed, with the antennas set up on the adjacent dance slab.

Directions You must enter the through the Fair Grounds' side gate on Grant Avenue. From Loop 337, turn south on Common St. Pass over the river & continue past the Fair Grounds. Turn right on N Grant Avenue & go 2 blocks to the gate. Enter the gate & follow the road until it ends at the food pavilion. Turn left & park. We're located down the "alley" between the fence & building on the left. If all else fails, listen for the generator.

Details We are renting an air-conditioned travel trailer to house the main operating positions. We plan on setting up 4 stations:

  • Primary SSB (voice) station
  • Alternate modes stations:
    • CW (morse code),
    • RTTY (radio teletype),
    • PSK31 (digital), or secondary SSB
  • GOTA* ( all modes )
  • VHF ( all modes )
*The GOTA station is intended to encourage people to Get On The Air. It is dedicated for use by inactive hams or non-licensed people under the supervision of a control operator.

Food & Drink We're not organizing food & drink as a group. Feel free to bring your own. Because this is a family activity, we request that any smoking or consumption of alcoholic beverages be done away from the operating positions.
