Field Day 2008

On June 28th & 29th, Amateur Radio Operators (Hams) all over the World will participate in an annual exercise called FIELD DAY.

What is FIELD DAY?

According to the Amateur Radio Relay League, the object is, "To work as many stations as possible and in doing so, to learn to operate in abnormal situations in less than optimal conditions." That’s the official reason for having FIELD DAY, but another reason is for Amateur Radio Operators and their families to get together to have LOTS OF FUN and show Visitors many of the things that can be done with Amateur Radio – from the old Morse code to the new satellite communications and latest digital modes.

This year, there are some new locations and old locations to choose from. We're listing all of those we found registered at the ARRL Locator Site, plus some we knew about via email announcements. We're covering San Antonio first, then spreading out to other towns / communities near us, plus one location not so near us (Corpus Christi) just because they asked us to list them.

PHOTOS WANTED - Take digital photos at each FD event you visit, and then contact us for instructions on where to upload your photos for posting to the 2008 Field Day Photo Section. Credit will be given to the source of each photo.

2008 FIELD DAY SITE INDEX

San Antonio

AARO (callsign AA5RO) holds their event at the pavilion along side the running track behind University Hospital, 4502 Medical Drive, near corner of Louis Pasteur.

While you can see the site from Babcock Road, you need to drive around behind the hospital and enter guard gate off Floyd Curl & Medical (same as used for their meetings). See map below.

San Antonio

Texas Baptist Men will Baptisthold their Field Day event at the Baptist trailerSan Antonio Baptist Association Parking Lot 5807 IH-10 West in San Antonio. Location is inside Loop 410 on IH-10 between West Ave and Vance Jackson on the access road.

They shut down before I could visit them on late, late Saturday night, so nothing to report here unless someone sends us photos.

Boerne
Kendall County Amateur Radio (KARS) hold their event up in Boene at the Kendall County Fairgrounds. This site is on the edge of the East side of Boerne just off Hwy 46. I didn't make it out to this club's location this year, ran out of energy although my gas tank still held enough to make it there and back.

New Braunfels
Guadalupe Valley Amateur Radio Club
3485 River Road, near Slumber Falls Church Camp
New Braunfels, TX

This club faced some last minute changes, literally at the last minute. They showed up Saturday morning at their normal location, the Comal County Fair Grounds, only to find it chained up tight with no caretakers around to open the gates. So they drove over to a member's house out on River Road northwest of New Braunfels and set up there. They sent out quick emails to the club and interested parties to alert everyone to the new location, which must have worked, cause I was able to find them without any problems.

Good news, Mike's radio shack had A/C inside plus comfortable chairs and a bed to crash out on overnight, but they ran the generators and extension cords from the outside to power all the radios in accordance with the FD rules. They set up temp antennas outside in the yard, then had a BBQ later on in the evening.
